What is mock trial?
Mock trial is a simulated courtroom experience, similar to moot court. Participants in mock trial, simulate a trial using modified rules of evidence. These competitors either take the side of the Plaintiff/Prosecution or the Defense and take roles as attorneys and witnesses. Teams are given a mock civil or criminal case and spend months preparing for competition. Some compare mock trial to putting on a play where two casts are competing against each other.
Why should you join?
Mock trial is the closest an undergraduate student can get to experience the trials and tribulations of being an attorney. The insight and experience offered by competing in a mock trial meet or competitions are unrivaled for those seeking a career in law. In addition to helping to prepare for law school, the skills gained through competition are invaluable in many other professions and careers. Mock trial builds public speaking skills (especially under pressure), promotes thinking critically and quickly, and teaches the invaluable skill of being diligent and thorough in preparation.
How do I join?
We open up our organization for try-outs every fall. In the fall, prospective members are asked to complete a tryouts session that focuses on both content, adaptability, raw presentation skills, and more. We also give you all a chance to meet our returning members and network with us beforehand to know who we are. When it's the off-season, feel free to ask any questions through our email or Instagram. If you would like to stop by and attend a practice, feel free to do so!

What does Mock Trial offer you?
Mock Trial at VT prides itself on being a valuable experience and resource to those looking to enter a career in law or to improve their time as an undergraduate. The club, in addition to offering competitive mock trial opportunities, aims to bolster members' professional development through guest lectures and workshops. Our club is a great way to make friends as well, with multiple social events held throughout the year. The club is an excellent resume builder, with all exec positions up for election every year.
Do you need experience?
NO! Anyone and everyone is welcome to tryout for Mock Trial at VT! Our only requirements are a good attitude, and a willingness to improve. Every year the club hosts tryouts early in the fall semester. From there we hold new member education sessions to help familiarize them with mock trial, and teach them the necessary skills to go out and compete. While we welcome those with experience, Mock Trial at Virginia Tech is dedicated to comprehensively teaching the skills needed to compete and make the most of mock trial.
