What is mock trial?

Mock Trial is a simulated courtroom competition in which students argue fictional civil or criminal cases using modified rules of evidence and courtroom procedure. Competitors take on the roles of attorneys and witnesses, representing either the plaintiff/prosecution or the defense. Teams spend months preparing their case before competing against other universities at invitational and regional tournaments. Many people compare Mock Trial to a combination of debate, public speaking, and theater, where two teams present opposing sides of the same case before a panel of judges.

Why should you join?

Mock Trial offers one of the closest undergraduate experiences to practicing law, giving students the opportunity to develop courtroom advocacy, legal reasoning, and public speaking skills in a competitive setting. While it is an excellent way to prepare for law school, the skills gained through Mock Trial extend far beyond the legal profession. Members learn to think critically, communicate persuasively, collaborate effectively, and perform confidently under pressure. Whether you plan to become a lawyer, enter business, pursue public service, or follow another career path, Mock Trial provides experiences and skills that will benefit you long after graduation.

How do I join?

Virginia Tech Mock Trial holds tryouts each fall for prospective members. The tryout process includes a session designed to evaluate key skills such as content understanding, adaptability, and presentation ability. Prospective members also have the opportunity to meet returning team members and learn more about the organization before tryouts. Outside of the fall tryout period, interested students are welcome to reach out with questions via email or Instagram. We also encourage prospective members to attend a practice to get a better sense of the team and what we do.

What does Mock Trial offer you?

Virginia Tech Mock Trial is designed to provide a meaningful and well-rounded experience for students interested in law, advocacy, and professional development. In addition to competitive mock trial opportunities, the organization supports members through workshops, training sessions, and guest lectures that help build practical skills in communication, critical thinking, and public speaking. Beyond competition and skill development, VT Mock Trial fosters a strong sense of community through social events held throughout the year. The organization also provides leadership opportunities, with executive board positions elected annually, allowing members to gain valuable experience in organization and team management.

Do you need experience?

No experience is required to join Virginia Tech Mock Trial. We welcome all students who are interested in trying out, regardless of prior exposure to mock trial or debate. The only expectations are a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and improve.
